How to choose the best Primer according to Skin type?

Well, surprisingly, the answer to this is yes. Make up products if not chosen as per the skin type and its requirements they can worsen the skin condition and damage the skin cells. In our upcoming series of blogs we will be talking about various makeup products and how one can ensure that they are opting for the right products.

Primers and foundations make the base of the makeup and are in direct contact with skin. If they go wrong they can hamper the skin cells, cause problems like acne breakouts, premature ageing, pigmentation etc. So, first let’s understand what exactly primers are.

What are Primers?
They make the base for the foundation and concealer and help them set evenly on the skin surface by covering all imperfections and giving smooth texture to skin. While choosing the primer one can opt for primers that contain SPF as it will give an added benefit. Also, look for antioxidant ingredients like apple fruit extract, coffee extract, green algae or green tea extract. One can also look for soothing agents like chamomile and aloe vera. Avoid primers that contain alcohol or fragrance as they can irritate the skin.

  • Oily Skin

The primers made for oily skin not only make canvas for foundation but can also keep keep the oil under control. These are also known as mattifying primers. They also help by working on large pores and acne. Further, mattifying primers do not interfere with the sebum production. Primers loaded with botanical extracts and antioxidants will benefit oily skin and form ideal base for foundation.

  • Pores & Acne-prone Skin

Similar to oily skin, mattifying primers will be beneficial for acne-prone skin. One can also look out for non-comedogenic primers which ensure they won’t clog the pores leading to acne breakouts. Also, primers containing salicylic acid as one of the ingredients will be beneficial, as they will help in reducing acne. Primers containing tea tree oil and flaxseed oil are also proven to be beneficial for acne prone skin as it reduces oil production.

  • Dull Skin

This type of skin requires nourishing and hydrating ingredients in their primer like antioxidants. Opt for brightening formulas that will promote radiance like green tea extracts and other antioxidants like oat extracts.

  • Dry Skin

Dry skin need ingredients that can help hydrate and nourish the skin just like the serums and moisturisers. One can opt for hyaluronic acid based primers that will make the skin look plump and replenish the moisture of the skin cells and prep it for the makeup. Ingredients like coconut extracts also help hydrate and smoothen skin if present in primers.

  • Mature Skin

This type of skin requires nutrients, nourishment and antioxidants to keep skin glowing. Opt for formulas that are hydrating to improve overall texture of skin. Primers enriched in arginine, peptides and antioxidants will help promote youthful look. Moreover, primers containing SPF will further prevent UV damage to skin.

  • Sensitive Skin

If the skin is very sensitive look for primers that are alcohol free, paraben free and fragrance free as these ingredients can cause irritation and rashes. Ingredients that are hydrating like spring water and hyaluronate will be beneficial for soothing sensitive skin.

A primer forms the canvas for the makeup by working on imperfections and giving the skin a smooth texture. It is good to wear makeup but always keep the skin health in mind whilst choosing the makeup products including a primer.
